American Buddhist seminary was founded by the Venerable Madawala Seelawimala (known as Bhante Seelawimala) in 1982 with the help of a small group of committed Buddhists in the San Francisco Bay Area and several senior Buddhist monks living in the United States.
The Temple at Sacramento was started in November 1996 by American Buddhist Seminary (ABS) headed by Bhante Seelawimala with the collaboration of a small number of Sri Lankan Buddhists living in the greater Sacramento area and the San Francisco Bay Area. The cost of maintenance of the Temple has been carried by local donors, as well as donors from many parts of the United States.
Our main objective is to provide religious, academic, and vocational training needed by the monastic and secular Buddhist teachers to achieve our mission.
